The Youth Hospitality Training Centre opened on
May 1st, 2008 in the former Taj Mahal building on Herald Street.

The YHTC provides eight beds of up to six months of transitional
housing, as well as a hospitality and life skills training program.
Mentors and partners from within the hospitality industry
assist in the training and curriculum design.

The Youth Hospitality Training Program combines certification
such as Food Safe, First Aid, and Serving it Right, with hands-on
practical skills building in our industrial kitchen and demonstration
hotel room. Mentors from within the hotel, restaurant and retail
industry work with the youth to create a solid skills base. Finally,
practicum work helps the graduates get a start in the job force,
and to build connections of their own with potential employers.

One of the strongest features of this program is the holistic
approach we take to helping youth-at-risk. Upon entry, each
youth is assessed to determine what their needs are. VYES
then directs them to life skills, detox, secure housing, or directly
into the hospitality training program. Then, we work with the
youth until they are able to get and hold a job, understanding that
each person is different, and has different needs and capabilities.
