The Youth Outreach Team (YOOTS) pair a Victoria City Police Officers

intervention for at risk youth. Individual youth assisted by the Teams range
from street entrenched youth, transient youth from out of Victoria, to youth
from family homes, foster settings or other care facilities.

The Team work with all stakeholders in the downtown core to identify problem
areas and resolve issues.

The focus of the program is to provide initial contact with youth in an attempt
to refer youth to appropriate services.

The Outreach Team also strive to educate and enhance the relations among police,
businesses and street youth.

The Team provide awareness sessions focusing on prevalent issues in the downtown
core through education, youth groups and as School Liaisons for Victoria High School,
Central Junior High, S.J. Willis, STARS and ACCESS.

The Team work closely with statutory services (Ministry of Children and Family
Development, Public Health, Mental Health Addictions Services,
Probation, Social Workers, Outreach Workers, etc) that assist youth.

COUNSELLING services include:
  • Family Mediation

  • Crisis Intervention

  • Alcohol and Drug

OUTREACH services include:

  • Early contact with newer and younger youth entering the downtown

  • Connecting youth back into their community resources

  • School Liasons

The Team act as an outreach arm for various systems dealing with the youth, such
as families, social workers, probation officers, teachers and other police officers.

REFERRAL services include:

  • Re-connecting missing youth with family/caregivers

  • Connecting youth to social resources

YOOTS provides brief involvement with youth and then refers them to appropriate
resources therefore allowing the Team to spend as much time on
the streets as possible.
