We are saddened to hear about the passing of Helen Hughes. She was a champion of vulnerable youth within Victoria and meant a great deal to the Victoria Youth Empowerment Society. Her advocacy and tireless behind-the-scenes work has impacted the lives of thousands of youth. As many people are aware, Helen began our fundraiser Souper Bowls of Hope, which throughout the years has raised over a million dollars to fund programming at YES. Without her time, energy, and dedication, programs such as the Alliance Club and Summer Opportunities Program would simply not be what they are today. In fact, when you walk into the Alliance Club drop-in, you will see a plaque that dedicates the space to her as ‘Helen’s Place,’ an appropriate name given all she has done to make the space safe and comfortable for at-risk youth. This plaque is a reminder of all she has done not just for the Agency but for all the youth of Victoria.
