Executive Committee
Merissa raymond, President
Merissa Raymond was born and raised in southern Alberta and lived and worked in communities across Canada before settling in Victoria in 2016. She holds a law degree from the University of Victoria and practices as a civil litigator.
Merissa brings expertise in contracts, employment, and human rights law to the Board, along with a strong interest in creating clear, accessible policies and governance practices. Prior to law school, she worked in mental health care administration and tutored youth. She also spent 15 years coaching 5-pin bowling to young people of all ages in Alberta and on Vancouver Island.
Merissa is deeply committed to ensuring VYES remains a welcoming and affirming space for queer and trans youth. She believes young people can accomplish remarkable things when they are supported by caring adults who are willing to connect, and she is proud to serve an organization whose staff demonstrate that commitment every day.
Deena Dam, Vice President
Deena Dam joined the Board of Directors in December 2022. Raised in Ontario, she earned undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Public Policy and Political Science from the University of Guelph, followed by a law degree from the University of Essex.
After relocating to Victoria, Deena built extensive experience in public policy through her work with the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch and the Indigenous Justice Secretariat. She was called to the British Columbia Bar in May 2025.
Deena has volunteered on a range of social justice initiatives, including advocacy related to miscarriages of justice, law reform, and collaborative work with the Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to improve reporting of misogynistic acts. She greatly admires the impact VYES has on the community and is grateful for the opportunity to contribute her legal and policy perspective to the Board.
Taryn Castles, Treasurer
Taryn Castles is a finance professional with more than ten years of experience and currently works at the Municipal Finance Authority of British Columbia, which provides financing and investment solutions to communities across the province.
Her professional expertise includes financial management, operations, and organizational efficiency. Taryn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Victoria and considers herself a lifelong learner.
Taryn has previously served in executive roles with NEED2 Suicide Prevention Education and Support and the Bastion Square Revitalization Association. She is passionate about creating opportunities that empower youth and recognizes young people as a cornerstone of healthy and sustainable communities.
Alex Nelson, Secretary
Alex Nelson is a Chartered Professional Accountant with more than eight years of experience in public accounting and currently serves as a Senior Manager at Dusanj & Wirk Chartered Professional Accountants. Born and raised in Victoria, he also holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Victoria.
Alex is passionate about using his financial expertise to support meaningful community initiatives. He believes that stable, supportive environments are essential in helping young people thrive and develop the skills they need to succeed.
As a member of the Board, Alex contributes financial insight and a strong commitment to the mission of VYES. In his free time, he enjoys running, cycling, and exploring Vancouver Island with his partner and their dog, Winnie.

Anjuli Gustafson
Anjuli Gustafson is a CPA student with a strong foundation in accounting and financial management. She began her career auditing local nonprofit organizations with Grant Thornton and currently serves as a Business Manager at DMCL Chartered Professional Accountants, where she supports clients in the entertainment industry.
Anjuli brings a thoughtful and service-oriented approach to her work and has a growing interest in using her financial skills to support organizations that create meaningful community impact.
Aiden Winkel
Aiden Winkel is a medical student with the University of British Columbia through the Island Medical Program. Originally from Prince George, he holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the University of Northern British Columbia.
Before medical school, Aiden worked in economics and community engagement. These experiences, along with growing up in a smaller community, shaped his commitment to advocacy and his understanding of the importance of accessible health care and support systems.
Aiden is particularly interested in youth mental health, health equity, and improving access to care for underserved populations. He values community-based initiatives that help young people feel supported, connected, and empowered to succeed. Outside of school, he enjoys skiing, swimming, travelling, and spending time with friends and family.
Erin Shaw
Erin Shaw has lived in Victoria for more than 35 years, where she has raised her family, built her career, and contributed extensively as a volunteer. She believes the support VYES provides to youth and families is vital to the well-being of the community.
Her professional work has focused on access to justice across the nonprofit, public, and private sectors, and she currently works as a family law mediator. Erin has volunteered with organizations including the Victoria Foundation and Victoria Hospice, and she previously served on the VYES Board.
Erin has three grown children and one grandchild. In her free time, she enjoys reading, knitting, playing the piano, singing, and walking in the woods.
Sarah Garr
Sarah Garr has worked in public education for more than 30 years and is currently a secondary school principal in the Greater Victoria School District.
She is deeply committed to empowering youth and creating opportunities for young people to have their voices heard, particularly those who may not otherwise be represented. In her role as principal, Sarah has developed a strong understanding of the increasing complexities and challenges young people face both at school and in the broader community.
Since moving to Victoria from Vancouver seven years ago, Sarah has embraced island life and enjoys yoga, hiking, exploring Vancouver Island, and travelling with her husband, Dean.
Gerald Thompson
Gerry Thompson had a varied career; first in ship building then for forty-five years in the financial sector working as a stock broker and managing the branch office of several brokerage firms. Now successfully retired enjoying his wife, children, grandchildren, dog Ella and his boat.
Gerry’s involvement with youth at risk started in 1985 with the Association for Street Kids (ASK) and was instrumental in merging ASK with the Alliance Club to form Victoria youth Empowerment Society (VYES). He has served in many rolls for the organization including President and Treasurer. He is very proud of the organization and how it has evolved to meet the changing needs of down town youth. Also, very encouraged by the current strength and caring of the staff and board. Mostly, proud to have been involved with this essential down town organization.
Madeline Geneau
Madeline Geneau is a founding member of HiBoop, a Victoria-based mental health assessment software company dedicated to improving access to care. She holds a background in psychology and has worked with organizations such as TELUS Health and Cridge Transition House for Women. Madeline is committed to youth wellbeing, mental health advocacy, and strengthening community supports.
As Director at Large for the Victoria Youth Empowerment Society, Madeline is eager to support initiatives that empower youth throughout Greater Victoria.
